University of Salford Students’ Union seeks Lay Trustee – legal expertise welcomed
The University of Salford Students’ Union is an independent democratically run charity led by elected student representatives working to represent student’s academic interests. Join as a Lay Trustee to help make sure our students’ University experience is the amazing, life changing experience it should be.
The University of Salford Students’ Union (USSU) offers a diverse range of social opportunities, designed for students to make friends, learn new things, improve fitness, take up new hobbies or develop old ones. Thousands of students are involved in our activity groups, sports clubs, social programmes and our student radio station.
Our vision “to confront and overcome the barriers to learning” has never been more relevant than it has in the past year. We’re proud that we’ve been able to secure over £1,000 in saved payments for students who are renting, and we’ve secured additional funding to help our students get the equipment they need. We’ve worked with our University partner to put a Covid-19 safety net in place and have continued to lead progressive work to reduce the Black award gap, celebrate diversity and promote democratic student led leadership.
We have exciting times ahead as we emerge from the pandemic, reflect on the learning and seek to maximise the opportunities afforded to us with increased digital engagement. Our new Lay Trustees will play a role in our next strategy, which we’ll be looking to refresh soon.
Within the two Lay Trustee roles we have available, we’re seeking at least one Trustee with HR and/or Equality, Diversity and Inclusion expertise. We can be flexible with our other position but welcome expertise in Finance, Actuary, Governance, Advocacy/Lobbying and/or Legal.
We’re also open to supporting first-time Trustees and deliver yearly Trustee training.
Whilst our Student and Sabbatical Trustees reflect the diversity of the Union’s membership, this hasn’t always been the case with our Lay Trustees. Inclusion is one of USSU’s core values and we’d be keen to enhance the diversity of our Board and especially encourage applications from candidates from an ethnic minority and/or women.
